I've been a songwriter since I was thirteen years old (that
seems like two years ago, but it's not!) and used to work part-time
in a recording studio to earn time to record my early song demos. I
can't remember a time that I didn't write. I guess that being
somewhat of an introvert, it has always been easier for me to express
myself in writing than in person, but I'm sure you'd find that most
writers are that way.
In the early days, I wrote and performed as Brian Allan in the Shoremen and Brian and Dave Tomorrow's People. We had quite a few records ( the old 45's, if you can dig it!?) that received a good bit of airplay. I also wrote the Alma Mater for Catonsville Community College. I don't know if they still use it, since the school changed its name a few years ago, but it was one of my personal highlights. My major writing influences have been Brian Wilson and Paul Simon and Jimmy Webb.
I have been extremely fortunate as a writer to have been mentored by some of the best professional publishing managers in the music business. As an adjunct staff writer for Edward B. Marks Music, Chrysalis Music and Screen Gems EMI, I received outstanding support from Bob Currie, Marv Goodman, Dick Stone and others who gave me the kind of criticism and support that one needs to improve professionally. For the last eight years, I have benefited from an excellent coaching relationship with Scott Turner, a former VP of A&R with Liberty/Imperial Records and Audie Murphy's co-writer on many, many great songs. As a matter of fact, "Five String Guitar" on my Legacy album is dedicated to Scott.
Through most of my early and mid career, I was a pop oriented writer, primarily working the New York markets, but when I moved to the mountains west of Frederick, Maryland, my writing turned decidedly country. The reason for that was that the rock radio station lowered its signal at night and in the morning. I couldn't get anything but country and the result was a greater emphasis on lyrical quality, which country music requires. I have quite a few songs in Nashville markets. In 1982, the O'Roark Brothers covered my song, "Can't We Start Over Again" and it became a Billboard, Cashbox and Music Business magazine "Pick Hit" The song received national and international radio play, including Canada, the UK and France. Other artists that covered my work are Debbie Martin, Maury Sullivan, Roman Gregory, Don TeBeaux, Carolyn Justice, John Green and John Noren, as well as a British duo that I prefer to forget.
In 2001, I began performing with my brother Craig as Three Down and The Moose. We released "Johnny U" which was used at the commemoration of John Unitas Stadium at Towson University. Although I still play with my brother, I have been performing solo and with other artists a great deal the past two years. You can often find me at Leadbetters 2 in Fells Point, Maryland, where I enjoy many good friends and relationships with some really great artists. To name a few, I hold a special feeling for Lori Grigsby, Ken Gutberlet, Curt Reynolds, Larry Dennis, Yvonne Bishop, Pat Coyne , Terrence Bluesfield, Pete Baker, Rachel Hall and Sabrina. In addition, I have also produced recordings for Lori, Uncle John, Pat Coyne and Curt Reynolds.
Check my schedule and come out and see me. We always have FUN!!!!
